Treating Sports Injuries with Sports Massage Therapy

Massage for sports therapy has been used by athletes for many years. It's so common that a special type of massage called sports massage therapy was developed especially for athletes. This massage combines aspects of Swedish massage and shiatsu to prepare muscles to perform at their peak and to treat injured muscles.

Massage can be used to treat many sports injuries including:

  • strains
  • tendinitis
  • plantar fasciitis

Massage helps fix muscle imbalances that can result from athletic training. These imbalances lead to injury. Massage helps lengthen tight, shortened muscles.

When exercised muscles create a waste product called lactic acid. Build-up of lactic acid causes muscle soreness. Massage helps muscles drain lactic acid more quickly.

Massage helps increase circulation. Muscles that are receiving plenty of oxygen perform better and are less likely to get injured. Massage also helps increase muscle flexibility and muscle stability.
