Massage therapy best suits someone who is interested in alternative medicine and wellness. Do you like to help people? Are you a good problem solver? Do you have an interest in healthcare careers? Your training will give you the basics needed to be a good massage therapist, but the best therapists continue to study and learn well after graduating from school. Massage requires you to apply practical knowledge you learned in school and intuitive knowledge at the same time.
Massage can be physically demanding work. Learning how to use proper body mechanics will help you be a better therapist and will put less stress on your body. Some modalities are more demanding than others. There are many different types of massage. Most people start with the basics and then focus on a particular style once they leave school.
When you become a massage therapist you can work in spas, chiropractic offices, cruise ships, resorts, acupuncturists' offices, complementary and alternative medicine clinic, pain management clinics, and many other places. Some people travel to offices and businesses to do on-site massage. You can even start your own massage business. Some people visit clients in their homes.
When you become a massage therapist, you may want to work for someone else at first, but working for yourself is usually the best deal for a therapist. I have worked for myself and for others. I much prefer working for myself. If you want to open your own massage business, you need to learn business skills.
Get some massages if you haven't before and see what you think. Meet some massage therapists and ask them what they think about their career. You may want to go to work with one of them one day to see what it's like. Doing these simple things will help you find out if massage therapy is a good career for you.
