Structural Muscular BalancingStructural muscular balancing (SMB) is a bodywork technique that uses many different types of massage therapy in one session. The therapy provides chronic pain relief for many conditions and can be used to improve posture and ease of movement. Imbalance in the musculoskeletal system causes pain. If you look at your joints for example, they have muscles that oppose each other on all sides. If the muscle group on one side of the joint is considerably stronger than the opposing group of muscles, it puts a strain on that joint that will cause pain. Muscular imbalances like this contribute to neck and back pain. They also contribute to conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, TMJ and tendonitis. The goal of SMB is to bring the muscles back into balance reducing pain and making it generally easier to move around. The therapist does this by:
The therapist accomplishes this by using positional release techniques, myofasical releases, deep tissue massage and muscle testing. This therapy is good for anyone suffering from chronic pain and muscular pain conditions. Athletes who are worried about muscle imbalances from doing a lot of training also benefit from this therapy.
