Relaxation Massage
A Soothing Stress Relief Therapy
Relaxation massage is a wonderful stress relief therapy that calms nerves and increases endorphins. It is a form of Swedish massage therapy that is practiced in many spas.
It isn't deep like a deep tissue or neuromuscular massage. The aim isn't to treat dysfunction in your body or muscle pain. The aim is to soothe the nerves and calm the mind. The therapist massages your entire body without focusing on one specific spot.
This therapy is often given in a massage therapy spa where other spa treatments are offered. You can often get this type of massage in a spa package along with other treatments like facials or pedicures. The session can last from 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the amount of time you purchase.
Some spas offer couple options. During a couples relaxation massage you and your partner will receive your massages in the same room. A therapist will be assigned to work with each of you. Many couples find this to be a great way to relax together.
Some places also offer tandem relaxation massage. During a tandem session two therapists work on you at the same time. The therapists work different parts of your body at once. One therapist may work on the left side while the other works on the right or one may work on your legs and feet while the other works on your back. Having four hands giving you a massage at once is very relaxing. Talk about stress relief!
For this type of massage you will remove most of your clothing and lay on a massage table. You can keep your underwear on or take it off. You should do whatever you feel most comfortable doing. There will be a sheet or towel provided for you to cover up with. Draping is used throughout the therapy to maintain your modesty. The treatment is usually done in a dimly lit room with relaxing music playing in the background. The therapist may have candles lit to add to the relaxing environment.
Based on Swedish massage techniques, the therapist uses long, gliding strokes. The pressure is light to moderate. There is no deep pressure used in relaxation massage. If you want deep pressure, you should opt for a therapeutic massage. The therapist uses oil or lotion to provide a lot of glide.
Essential oils can be used to promote relaxation. Many therapists offer aromatherapy massages at an additional cost. Essential oils help calm the mind and engage the sense of smell in the relaxation process.
We all experience stress in our busy lives. Getting a soothing massage can help melt that stress away and leave you feeling great. Find out more about the benefits of massage therapy here.
