No Hands Massage

No Hands Massage is a gentle yet deep form of massage in which the therapist uses his forearms and elbows instead of hands to treat the client. The therapy is good for anyone with complaints of muscle pain.

This therapy was started by UK therapist, Gerry Pyves. He developed the technique about twenty years ago when he hand and wrist pain started interfering with his ability to massage his clients. Desperate to continue his massage business he developed a way to give treatments without using his hands.

After about twelve years of using No Hands Massage in his practice he started teaching his technique to other therapists who were also having problems with their hands. These informal lessons helped Pyves hone his techniques and test them on a wider population.

The therapy can be quite deep because therapists learn to effectively use the weight of their entire bodies to provide pressure for the massage. Because they are using the forearms to do this you don't experience the pain that you may feel with other deep tissue massages.

This massage is based on the principles of Swedish massage. It uses the same strokes and techniques. The difference is that the therapist doesn't use her hands during the therapy. When you go for a session, you will disrobe and lay on a table just like you would for a Swedish massage. You will be covered with a sheet or towel for draping purposes. Massage lotion or oil is used during the therapy.

If you suffer from any musculoskeletal pain, such as pain back this massage is a good choice for you.

If you are a massage therapist who is suffering from hand and wrist pain this is a good massage for you to learn. It has saved some therapists careers. Not using your hands during a session will help give them time to heal. Many therapists leave massage because they are injured. Learning proper body mechanics and how to massage without the use of your hands may be just what you need to stay in the business.
