Massage Stones

Massage stones are used in hot stone massage therapy. These smooth, black stones are used to apply heat to the body and gives the client a sense of grounding.

Stones used in this type of massage are usually basalt. These stones contain a lot of iron so they can easily retain the heat needed for massage. The stones are cleaned, sanitize and heated in water between 120 and 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

When choosing massage rocks look for rocks that are smooth with no rough edges or cracks. The stones usually appear greenish or gray when dry and turn black once wet. You can purchase natural stones that have been shaped over time by water or handcrafted stones that have been shaped by machines.

If you choose to buy natural stones normally used for landscaping be aware that some may not be the right shape for massage and may have rough edges and cracks that require that they're discarded. Handcrafted stones are generally more expensive than natural stones.
