Massage Lotion
Natural Lotions as Massage Supplies

Massage Table and Chair Packages

Massage lotion is an alternative to massage oil. Natural lotions are among the most common massage supplies. Many people prefer using lotion to oil because it absorbs into the skin better and is less greasy. Oil tends to stain and lotion doesn't.

Though it absorbs into the skin better than oil, the lotion used for massage doesn't absorb as quickly as normal lotion. If you used normal body lotion, you'd have to reapply more often so you'd end up using more. I've used regular lotion to give a massage before when I was in a fix, but it's generally better to use lotion made specifically for massage.

Lotions are often used for deep tissue massage and other work where the therapist has to do a deep massage. Lotion has more grip than oil so it allows the therapist to apply deeper pressure.

I started out using lotion in school mainly because that's what everyone in school used. We used Biotone, but I didn't really like it. After I graduated I started using an all natural cream, but again I just didn't really like it. Finally after doing lots of massages and talking to other therapists about what they used, I started using massage oil. Oil was a lot more economical and I thought that it just seemed more natural because it isn't full a lot of different ingredients.

I mentioned cream so let's talk about it. Another alternative to massage lotion and oil is massage cream. Massage creams are even thicker than lotion. On thing I didn't like using the cream because it using came in a wide mouth jar and I'd have to scoop out the amount of cream I would need to use into a separate container. I also ended up separating out too much cream for a massage and having to throw it out. This is a minor problem and I'm sure that if I stuck with it I would've eventually figured out the amount of cream I used during a session. I liked the silky consistency of most creams, but I just felt like it was more hassle than it was worth.

There are also massage gels. Gels are a good alternative for people who are allergic to lotions and don't want to use oil. There aren't very many gels on the market and most therapist don't work with them. Like massage cream, a little goes a long way. I used a gel once in massage school and didn't like the feel of it, but that was a long time ago. Different gels have different qualities.

Many of these products are made from a combination of massage oils. No matter what you decide to get you should check the ingredients before purchasing any product. Try to buy products with natural ingredients. It's better for you and the person you're massaging.

When trying to find a new lotion to you start out by buying a small container of it and trying it out. You don't want to get a gallon jug of something you might not like. Here are some massage lotions to try out.
