LooyenWork
Deep Tissue Massage without the Pain

LooyenWork, also written Looyen Work, is a gentle form of deep tissue massage that combines aspects of Rolfing, postural integration and Aston Patterning. This therapy can be used on its own or combined with other forms of deep tissue therapy.

This type of massage was created by Ted Looyen in the 1980s. After suffering from an injury, Looyen received physical therapy to treat the injury, but didn't like that fact that the deep tissue massage he was given during therapy hurt. He became determined to invent a type of body work that could treat deep underlying layers of muscle tissue without pain. One of Looyen's core beliefs is "Pain does not heal pain."

As he developed the therapy, he found that people could benefit emotionally from it also. He started weaving psychotherapy in with the massage to help his clients get both physical and emotional relief from pain. He found that combining the physical and emotional work helped his clients experience more complete relief after therapy.

When you injure muscle tissue tiny adhesions form in the fibers. This means that the fibers get stuck together preventing the tissue in the area from getting properly nourished. This causes pain. Deep tissue therapies help get rid of these adhesions by moving the muscles fibers. Once these adhesions are broken nourishment can more freely flow to the tissue giving it a chance to heal.

This therapy can be used to treat physical problems like:

  • back pain
  • neck pain
  • shoulder pain
  • tendonitis
  • sciatica
  • repetitive strain injuries

The psychotherapy aspect of the massage also makes it good for treating emotional difficulties like:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • drug addiction
  • PTSD

.

It's important to find a therapist that you feel comfortable working with. Some therapists will use only Looyen massage when working with you and others will combine it with other therapies. You will get the best result from working with a therapist you feel absolutely comfortable with. You may need to visit a few different therapists to find the right one.
