The Hakomi Method
Integrative Somatics and Somatic Psychotherapy

The Hakomi Method is a type of somatic psychotherapy that was created by Ron Kurtz in the 1970's. This therapy combines many aspects of psychology and bodywork to make the client more aware of his behavior and figure out how to change it.

This method combines many different modalities of bodywork and psychotherapy, including:

  • Gestalt
  • Psychomotor
  • Feldenkrais
  • Focusing
  • Ericksonian Hypnosis
  • Neurolinguistic Programming

Clients are taught to recognize emotional patterns and physical cues for emotions. Mindfulness is an important part of the method which is grounded in Toaist and Buddhist philosophies. Hands-on bodywork is used as part of the therapy to help you gain awareness.

One of the central beliefs of practitioners is that people are self-organizing systems that have organized themselves around a core set of beliefs. These beliefs can be quite limiting. The practitioners works to help you change those limiting core beliefs. They do this by following these simple steps:

  • Create a healing relationship
  • Establish mindfulness
  • Evoke an experience
  • State specific processing
  • Tranformation
  • Integration

Some bodywork practitioners believe that tissues in the body hold memories. Practitioners use bodywork to help trigger memories and tap into hidden emotions. This helps you become more attuned to your core beliefs.

This therapy is good for people who are trying to work through issues such as:

  • abuse
  • trauma
  • chronic pain
  • addiction

If you want to find more about this therapy read Ron Kurtz's book, Body-Centered Psychotherapy.
