Fijian Massage
Fijian massage is a deep tissue form of massage therapy that can be done with or without oil. Fiji is a country that consists of many different islands. Each island has its own specific type of massage. The massage from this country that is now practiced in the West came from Kadavu. The people of Kavadu have been massaging each other with their feet for many years. It is part of their traditional medicine. The traditional healer in the village is trained in this technique along with other traditional medicine techniques. Massage therapist, Lolita Knight, has lived in and visited Fiji many times. In 1997, she started learning this type of massage massage from Simonis, a traditional Fijian healer. Simonis has been doing this type of massage since he was 7 years old. Once Knight learned the massage style, she took it back to New Zealand with her and modified it. She now teaches this style of massage all over the world. This deep tissue therapy can be used to treat a variety of conditions including:
The person receiving the massage lays on a straw mat on the ground. Towels and pillows can be used to make you more comfortable. The massage can be done with you fully clothed using no oils or lotions. Fijian barefoot oil massage is done with oil on bare skin. Both types of massage are relaxing while being therapeutic. The therapist sits on a chair or stool and applies pressure to your muscles using various parts of their feet. This type of massage is also good for the therapist because they don't have to worry about injuring their hands and can use more body weight to apply pressure.
