Embodiment Training

Embodiment Training is a somatic therapy that combines Eastern and Western practices to help you grow and transform physically and spiritually. Practitioners believe the body is not an obstacle, but a doorway to growth and development. Combining meditation and mindfulness with bodywork practitioners become more aware of self.

This therapy was created by Will Johnson. In the early 70s, Johnson started exploring the principles of Gazing at the Beloved and The Faraji Dance Troupe. In 1976, he became a Rolfer after studying with Ida Rolf. Johnson started combining bodywork principles with Eastern practices of meditation, mindfulness and movement education to form his own therapy. In 1995, he started teaching the principles of Embodiment to others.

This training involves nine practices. Only the first six practices are used by all people practicing Embodiment. The last three are used by some at their own discretion. The practices include the following:

  1. Gazing at the Beloved: Looking into the eyes of a partner for an extended period of time

  2. The Faraji Dance Troupe: Exploring balance through movement

  3. Sitting Meditation: Focusing on breath, balance and body to understand embodiment

  4. Mindfulness Practice: Being aware in the moment

  5. Bodywork: Exploring various types of massage therapy like Rolfing, Trager, and watsu

  6. Exercise and Nutrition: Maintaining the temple of the body with diet and exercise

  7. Samantabhadri Circle: The sexual extension of Gazing at the Beloved

  8. Water Monkeys: Increasing a couples union with movement in water

  9. Sacraments: The use of mind-altering herbs to enhance your practice

Embodiment Training can be used to help you shed inhibitions, tap into your creativity and unlock your body's inner intelligence. Couples can use the therapy to increase their sense of connection. This practice is taught in workshops or classes. You can learn the practice on your own or in couples.
