Cruise Ship Massage Jobs
Massage Therapy Careers
Cruise ship massage jobs can be a great way to see the world. We've all seen the commercials. They make working on a cruise ship seem great, but there is a downside. Working on a cruise ship may not be paradise, but it still may be a good career move for you.
If you decide to work on a cruise ship be prepared to be away from home for an extended period of time. Contracts are usually 5 to 8 months. You spend that whole time on board the ship. There are no breaks during which you go home.
Pay aboard cruise ships is usually much less than a therapist can make working on land. The average salary is between $200 and $800 per week. You can also get tips from passengers. Therapists who work on shorter cruise usually say tips on those cruises are better than they are on long around the world cruises.
The workday on a cruise ship is long. Working a 10 to 12 hour shift is not unusual. Though most times you are only required to give a relaxation massage this can still wear out your body. Most days you have clients back to back with very few breaks. If you work longer cruises, you end up working less, but you also make less money.
Besides giving massages, therapists are expected to sell spa products. Some ships put a lot of pressure on you to sell products and pay you according to your sales commission. You also have to clean the spa at the end of everyday.
Therapists live in dorm room type quarters and the food they serve to the workers is not as good as the food they serve to the employees.
Everything I just listed makes cruise ship massage jobs sound awful doesn't it? Like I said in the beginning, it depends on what you make of it. There is an upside.
Because you don't have living expenses, you can save a lot of money while working on a ship. You can use the money to pay off all your debt or just put the money in the bank.
You may not have a lot of spare time to see the various cities that your ship docks at in the beginning, but most ships make the same run over and over. With repeated visits to the same places you get to know them quite well and after being there repeatedly will be able to see all the sites.
The close living quarters provide the opportunity to make plenty of new friends. Many people who work on cruise ships say that they met some of their closest friends on the ships.
Cruise ship massage jobs may not be the best jobs in the world, but they do have their advantages.
