Continuum Movement TherapyContinuum movement therapy is a form of movement education that is based in the concept of the body being made up of mostly fluids. This gentle therapy includes breathing techniques, sound, and imagery to help you experience movement on a cellular level. As the flow of the fluid in the body increases using these techniques, you'll notice rigid painful tissue loosening and your health improving.
The HistoryEmily Conrad was a dancer who studied Afro-Haitian dance and ballet. Her love for movement and her observations about the similarities in the movements of all living things led her to create Continuum. In 1974 she created a movement therapy for use with spinal cord injury patients. Her movement protocol was included in a research study conducted at UCLA that same year. Conrad teaches that the body is a fluid system that is learning to live on land. As we live in this world, we live in gravity. Gravity compresses the body making it harder for fluid to travel through the tissues. This therapy works to decompress the body and encourage fluid movement.
What to ExpectBecause it was developed by a dancer this form of somatic education is very dance like. The person hangs from a piece of specially designed equipment and twists and turns trying to engage their muscles in various planes of movement. Continuum includes all aspects of movement we make. When we breathe and make sounds we also have to move. This therapy includes the resonance of sound and breath as part of the treatment. Even the smallest movements you make can affect your health. This therapy follows no strict protocol. Through exploring movement the body is freed. When restrictions are removed, you begin to move with ease and feel healthy and alive. Sound Here's a video of Emily Conrad explaining some of the ideas of her therapy.
